Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, also called Puerto Princesa Underground River, is located in the Saint Paul Mountain Range on the northern coast of the island and bordered by St. Paul Bay to the north and the Babuyan River to the east.

Two years ago, a group of environmentalists and geologists discovered that the underground river has small waterfalls inside the cave. They also found a huge cave dome, measuring 300 meters above the underground river, incredible rock formations, large bats, a deep water hole in the river, more river channels, another deep cave, marine creatures, and more. Deeper areas of the underground river are almost impossible to explore due to oxygen deprivation.

Last January 28, 2012, this underground river was officially chosen as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature which is indeed a splendid conclusion to be made.

This most beautiful subterranean river in the world is a must-see for first time visitors and tourists in Palawan.

Its main attraction is an 8.2 kilometer Underground River that winds through a spectacular cave before emptying into the South China Sea. At the mouth of the cave, a clear lagoon is framed by ancient trees growing right to the water’s edge. Some animals such as monkeys, large monitor lizards, and squirrels find their niche on the beach near the cave. Visitors can also explore the deeper part of the forest by further activities such as bird watching and mountain trekking.

The park was declared a premier ecotourism destination and has been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage lists for its outstanding universal value and ecological significance as a natural site of intense beauty.

Crocodile Farm

Crocodile Farm serves as the highlight of Puerto Princesa, Palawan though some might find it scary. A tour here not only brings joy and wonder to everyone but also quite educational. For only Php 20, you’ll gain a lot of knowledge about crocodiles and other animals there once you visit this farm.

This farm is for breeding crocodiles for commercial purposes. There’s this news about a crocodile that swallowed a young girl playing in a swamp area nearby that even made the people more afraid of them.

We are aware that we get some of our leather products from crocodiles’ skin and for that, they are a big help. Some adventurers and food lovers also eat crocodile meat and there is a restaurant there in Puerto Princesa that offers this kind of dish, the popular Kinabuch restaurant.

The farm also has its hatchery where the baby crocodiles are born and then the old ones are being kept. Visitors witness how they are being feed and they can try it afterwards.

The farm also gives chance to the visitors to take pictures with the baby crocodiles inside the farm for souvernirs and they enjoy it a lot especially children guests.

The tour is only for hatchery and the small dens; the other larger crocodiles are in the area which guests are not permitted to visit. Aside from crocodiles, the farm has also a zoo that features other animals in Palawan.

Such a nice place in Palawan to go into, isn’t it? Try it with your family but take extra cautious!

The World-Class Amanpulo Resort

Much has been said about the wonders of Palawan. The world bowed their heads to the astounding Underground River in Puerto Princesa which is now among the Seven New Wonders of Nature.

The Coron Island Cove and El Nido Marine Reserve Park are two other more majestic attractions of the beautiful province of Palawan. Both are immensely popular destinations and have been drawing local and foreign tourists in huge number each year.

Amanpulo Resort, Pamalican Island, PalawanAnd then there’s the world-class and world-famous Amanpulo. The resort’s name was derived from the Sanskrit word aman, which means peace, and pulo which is the Tagalog term for island. These are the exact two words to define the entire Pamalican Island on the northern part of Palawan where the resort is gracefully situated.

Amanpulo gives justice to peace and luxury at its best, hence inviting big names across the globe to become the resort’s guests. Hollywood celebrities like Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro, and the late Michael Jackson had experienced Filipino hospitality in Amanpulo.

Anyone can stay at the resort, as long as you can afford, of course, you can enjoy! The lowest room rate is $1,000 so do the math.

If you like being somewhere far from everyone, under the vast skyline, and surrounded by crystal blue water, Amanpulo is the idyllic place.

Ursula Island Game Refuge and Bird Sanctuary

urusla islandPalawan has always been known not just for its beaches but also for its forests. Ursula Island Game Refuge and Bird Sanctuary is a tourist destination located near the municipality of Brooke’s Point in southern part of Palawan that features seedlings and saplings which are commonly present at lowland forests. At the place, you can find trails that will lead you to the wells. Also, for the comfort of the guests, you will find nipa huts where you can sit and relax. This natural attraction served as a haven of different birds, at the same time, fishermen can also catch different species of fish.

Bird SanctuaryThe best time to go to Ursula Island Game Refuge and Bird Sanctuary is 2 hours before sun sets since this is the time that almost all species of birds that can be found in the Philippines culminate after a tiring day of flight. This sanctuary was established because of dwindling numbers of endangered bird species. Its purpose is to help those creatures once again increase in numbers as well as to provide them a home where they will be safe and protected from hunters. This tourist spot has also a beach and like the other beaches in Palawan, it has fine white sand and turquoise sea where tourists can go swimming while waiting for the views of amazing birds before sunset. Even if the beach is not as developed as other ones in Palawan, we’ll assure that it is very clean.

And of course, after knowing this spot, for sure you want to know how to get there. So here it is:

Ursula Island is found in Rio, Tuba Village in Bataraza. Bataraza is just less than 250 kilometers from the capital city of Palawan, Puerto Princesa. The Game Refuge and Bird Sanctuary is accessible from Puerto Princesa and all you need to do is to take an about 6 hours jeepney ride to Bataraza. And since Ursula Island is a smaller island in Palawan, you need to take a pumpboat ride to get there, which is an additional 2 hours trip. Although it is a very long distance to travel to get to Ursula Island Game Refuge and Bird Sanctuary, it is 100% sure that all you will see and discover there is worth the trip, the time and the effort!
